Restaurants
Paris
prides herself in having more than 4,000 restaurants, to suit
everybody’s taste and purse. Ethnic cuisine abounds: every country in
the world has a culinary outpost in the city. You could even start your
own Tour de France: each French department proudly sends her regional
specialities to the capital, from freshly caught Brittany fish to the
sweetest Provence grapes.
Enemy Number One are ‘Le fastfood’ chains. Young
people just love this plastic food, symbol of our consumer society. Fast
food restaurants have conquered a large portion of the food market.
Gastronomically-minded parents tend to push away their foie gras or
truffles when thinking of their offspring gorging on this junk food.
French haute cuisine is under threat. Distress signals
are sent in the guise of experts in traditional gastronomy, who visit
schools and teach the erring sons and daughters how to eat and enjoy
‘real’ food.
A visitor to Paris should heed those distress calls. No more
hamburgers that all look and taste the same! No more pizza slices
straight from the microwave! Go out there and look for the true glory of
French gastronomy. ‘Amuse-gueule’ (a snack to amuse
your mouth): aren’t you getting hungry already?
Bon appétit!
