This important example of medieval architecture was built in the 14th
century as a palace for the Capetian dynasty. Fate took a dramatic turn
in 1431. The Conciergerie became a state prison. During the Revolution
the dungeons were on the point of overflowing. The historical rooms are
on view: the guardroom, armoury, the kitchen and dining rooms,
Marie-Antoinette’s cell and a number of pieces from the Revolutionary
era.
