Marais
Paris (3 and 4)
Underground: Chemin Vert, Rambuteau, Saint-Paul
This medieval district is one of the oldest in the city. The nobility
chose to live here in the 17th century. In order to maintain the many
magnificent palaces or ‘Hôtels Particuliers’ (private mansions),
certain parts of the Marais have been put on the list of national
monuments and historic buildings. Today the Marais is not just a
district of former aristocratic residences. It is also synonymous with
the Centre Georges Pompidou. In the shadow of this gigantic cultural
centre lies a colourful array of artists’cafés, music pubs, gourmet
restaurants and galleries.
