Palais Royal

Place du Palais Royal
Underground: Palais Royal / RER: Auber

Seat of the Council of State, therefore the interior of the building is not open to the public. But still it is worth visiting. The palace was built in 1634 for cardinal Richelieu, after which it was the centre of power for a short period of time. The cardinal died here, and Louis XIV spent a great deal of his childhood between these walls. When the building was taken over by his brother, the duke of Orleans, the demi monde moved in: the girls of pleasure settled in the palace and the gambling game flourished. In 1980 the building again drew attention with the setup of striped pillars, a creation of the artist Daniel Buren.
